A day in the life of a law graduate

Posted by:

My name is Grace Langdon and I started working at SLM Law part-time in September 2017 while I was still undertaking study as part of my Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) at ACU in Melbourne. At the beginning of 2019, I began work at SLM Law as a full-time Law Graduate, and as not many people seem to have an idea of what I do day-to-day, I thought I’d fill you in.

I began this year focusing on conveyancing which means I have spent a lot of time corresponding with clients, banks, real estate agents, conveyancers and other lawyers. I am now starting to work on files in other areas of law such as wills, debt recovery and self-managed super funds. On any given day I can be drafting wills and powers of attorney, contracts, vendor’s statements and letters of demand along with letters to our clients and other parties.

I also attend appointments with the lawyers in the office, and this is where I learn the most. It teaches me how to use my time and my client’s time effectively, to think about the best approach to solving clients’ issues, and most importantly, to think on my feet.

While these are my general day-to-day tasks, every day is different. About a month ago, a Certificate of Title came across my desk from 1866. Old titles are really interesting to look at as they show all the previous owners and provide a great history of the land you’re buying. This particular title was purchased for 7 pounds. On another occasion, I attended an out of office appointment with one of the lawyers at our elderly clients’ home and left with chocolate cakes for the whole office!

Apart from work, I am currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. This means I spend a lot of my time outside work studying, but it will be worth it when I attend the Supreme Court of Victoria in July to be formally admitted as a lawyer.

The profession I have chosen challenges me intellectually and personally. I especially enjoy working at SLM Law where I can dip my toes in different areas of law and really get to know our clients.

I can’t wait to receive my practising certificate in August!
